Goal Setting Part 3

  1. Be Passionate About Your Goals

Live it, breathe it, taste it. Thomas Edison was passionate about finding a way to produce incandescent light with the use of electricity. He certainly did not give up. It is reputed that he once was asked how it felt to have failed 700 times. He replied,”I haven’t failed 700 times; I’ve discovered 700 ways how not to do it.” Where would we be today if he hadn’t had his passion?

  2. Live in the Moment

Write all your goals down. Make sure you write them in the present tense and use positive words. For example, if your goal is to be a more generous person, you may want to write “I enjoy giving and sharing myself and what I have with others.” Having your goals in present tense will set them within reach and remind you that they are not that far away.

  3. Keep a Goal Journal

Your goal journal should contain all your goals. Beside each goal, explain why you chose those particular goals and how you believe they are related to your core values. Write down how you think you will feel once your goals are achieved. When you have reached your goal deadline and your goal really is accomplished, write down how you really feel at that moment and compare it to your previous answers. How do they compare?

  4. Stay on Top of It

Review your goals and your progress regularly. Record the progress you’ve made and, if during one week you have taken no action towards your goal, write nothing in big red letters. The sight of these big red letters should be enough to motivate you to get back to action the following week! If you have done nothing for more that two weeks, it’s time to revisit your goals. Perhaps the goals you had picked weren’t suited to you, or perhaps they were a little too high. Review them and change them to suit your needs if necessary.
