1. Visualize how you'd like your new year to be and dress for it! Want some more romance in the coming year? Pull off the lace and velvets and let your feminine style shine through. Need some excitement and joy? Drop the dark color palette and clash your best bright colors. Want some fun? Try new ways of putting things together.
2. Know your unique body shape and how to dress it. Once you learn about your proportions, it will become so easy to spot what works for your shape and what doesn't. Highlight your assets with bright or light colors, print, details and accessories and downplay your flaws by keeping that area quiet through using solid, dark colors and avoiding any busy design details or accessories that will exaggerate it.
3. Fit is key. Forget about sizes, think of the size as mere numbers on a tag, which will surely change from one designer and brand to the other. No one will see what size you are wearing and think you're fat for it but they will surely notice the bumps and lumps if you insist on sticking to "your smaller size"! Contrary to what many believe, going a size up makes you look slimmer as the fabric will skim your curves instead of hugging them.
4. Define your style personality. It is so easy to get stuck in a rut or just follow the trends and go for a window display look, but is what you're wearing reflecting your unique style? Try to incorporate a bit of "you" in the colors, fabrics, prints, accessories and styles you choose. Make sure they reflect your identity and tell people a bit about who you are and where you're going.
5. Know your colors. You can wear any color as long as it is in the right undertone, shade and value for you. Just because a color is "in" this season or it's looking great on your best friend does not mean it will look great on you. Experiment by placing the color under your chin and watching the effect it has on your complexion. Is it casting some yellow tones, making you look sick? Do you see any shadows? Does your face look like it's sinking into the color? Do you see the color before seeing you? If you answer yes to any, know that it's all wrong for you. The right colors will make you glow and shall match your level of contrast, never overpower them.
6. Now that you have an occasion coming, start planning for it! Don't wait till last minute to run a panic attack call of "I can't make it, I have nothing to wear!" Always start by shopping in your closet. Spot the styles that you like and make you feel great and search for something similar to them with a new twist. Or you may find an item you love but have never worn, so take it shopping with you. You may find its perfect match and create your own outfit!
7. Prepare a shopping list. Do a mind map of how you would like to be seen. Browse the magazines for inspiration and the windows next. Only hit the till when you are positive you have made a catch. Don't settle for anything just because "it's ok and you hate shopping". When you know what you are looking for, shopping becomes fun, trust me!
8. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to the mall and prepare for uninterrupted fun. You can bring your friends along but make sure you don't get caught up in their own sense of style of what they think looks great. Remember, you have to love it to carry it. They won't be wearing it for you.
9. What goes under your clothes is as important as your outfit. Invest in good foundation wear and make sure you have a professional fitting.
10. Accessories are the finishing touches to your outfit or they might be the foundation! Many people build outfits based on accessories, so if you're going that route make sure that your clothes are simple to complement that bold piece of jewelry. Don't clutter yourself with many and keep one main focal point. You decide where you want us to be looking! |
