Colors have a great impact on your physical and social image. The right undertones will make you look vibrant while the wrong ones will wash you out. Similarly, certain color contrasts in business will make you stand out while others will make you blend in the background.

Opt only for the colors that flatter your own natural colorings. If you naturally have a high degree of contrast between your skin, hair and color combination, then wearing light neutrals and soft colors will not be your best look.  Similarly, you should not go for a strong and clear color if you have soft, blended looks. You need to match your degree of contrast to the intensity of the color.

Another important aspect is the undertone of the color, being warm or cool. To test that, hold the color under your chin and watch what happens to your face. If you have not shaved, you will see the effect more direct on your beard. The wrong color will make it look green and cast dark shadows on your face while the right one will even out your skin tone and make you look vibrant.

Choose your colors based on the intentions and the messages you want to give as well.

In general, medium contrasts, achieved by combining a light color with a dark one, are perceived to be the best choice for business, as they communicate professionalism and make you look approachable.

High contrasts such a striking, bold colors combined with darker ones are better kept for occasional wear or when presenting to large groups as they are of very high command and they might make you look unapproachable. Stay away from low contrast colors at the work place, achieved by combining any two colors of the same shade and intensity, as they imply low presence and put you in the background.

Earth colors such as browns are perceived to be reliable and solid but boring, so don't use if you are applying for a creative job. Navy blue implies law and order and that's why it’s widely used for police and school uniforms; Wearing black all over will imply that you lack imagination as well. Always combine with a lighter color to add interest. Red is the power color and it's best used in moderation to give the right message of high command without looking aggressive; it's a great choice for any position that involves sales. Use light pinks in a small dose such as in a tie if you want to look sensitive and caring in front of the ladies. Purples show your creative side while yellows and oranges are not business colors and should be avoided. In general, the darker the color the higher command it implies.
