Going through a massive transformation in body shape to dealing with morning sickness and mood swings may not help in defining a fashion statement for this stage in your life, but that does not mean you cannot be stylish while at it!
First of all realize that looking good will make you feel better and give you the energy to concentrate on your all important pre natal milestones. Since comfort is your number one priority now, make sure to go for practical shapes, cuts and tailoring with natural, breathable fabrics, but don’t compromise on style.
You will certainly need to invest in maternity items once your belly starts to grow and you can’t fit into your clothes anymore. Many brands are offering dedicated maternity lines now so ask at your favorite shops before going for the traditional all maternity stores. You will definitely get a more trendy and edgy approach at maternal there.
Shop for the basic pieces like elastic waist pants and skirts in neutral colors and mix and match them with trendy items from your own wardrobe, like tops and jackets. Think about recycling some items too!
The key here is layering. If your tops tend to ride up your belly now, try to wear an elastic tube top under, but wear it right on your belly and not chest. These tube tops will come in extra handy as they will cover your new lump and make any item in your wardrobe wearable!
Get many in your best colors and start the mix and match frenzy. Another solution is to go one size bigger on skirts and pants and then take the items in after you go back to your old size. Avoid extra baggy clothes though as not to end up looking like a tent!
Next, don’t forget to accessorize. A simple addition of a colored or printed scarf, a statement piece ring or some colored bangles will take your outfit from “oh she’s pregnant” to “fashionably pregnant”!
Last, don’t go too maternal on your feet and give them some style treatment too. Considering you may have water retention now and they might be swollen most of the time, go for flats in a wider cut. Adding some color and embellishments to your shoes will keep them trendy and stylish.
This is one of the most important stages in any woman’s life, so make sure you celebrate it in style! |
