How to wear patterns
Patterns are in this season and from floral to bold, you have your wild pick to choose from. Keep in mind that you need to not only match the pattern to your style personality, but to land it in the right place.
Romantics will definitely be heading for floral patterns in more girly and softer. For the more dramatic, a floral pattern in a bold or edgier abstract style will do. Naturals and classics will love the comeback of the stripes.
Patterns attract attention and can liven up a rather dull solid color outfit but should be selected carefully. If you are trying to camouflage wide hips, go for patterns on top to draw the eye upwards. Place the pattern in a skirt only if you would like to look heavier on the bottom or to create the illusion of hips.
In terms of coordination, do not over do it. If you're brave enough to mix 2 patterns, make sure they are not in the same size and they kind of blend in some way. When wearing a pattern, keep it as the focal point and mix with a simple, solid color in an elegant outfit. Be careful when adding accessories as you do not want to end up looking like being caught in a wardrobe war with many elements competing for attention.
Keep in mind that round designs in patterns will add pounds. If you are trying to look slimmer, go for the vertical or diagonal lines and designs. The contrast between the pattern and the background is another thing to look at. Match at least 80% of the color in the pattern to your own natural coloring (warm or cool) and clash the remaining 20% to create an interesting and vibrant look. High contrast patterns scream for attention and should be placed strategically, highlighting your best figure assets. |
