Paul Smith Main Line, AW09

Paul Smith Mainline Winter 2009 is a typically English collection. Embroidery and special detailing add a touch of eccentricity to a very British look.

The silhouette is slim with narrow shoulders, slim waist, sleeves and lapels. Jacket lengths are slightly shorter.  English fabrics make a strong statement with English checks, tweeds and tartans gracing waistcoats, outerwear and over-dyed on shirts for a modern look.

Detailing is key throughout the collection; tailored items are graced with pleated pocket details, hand-stitch effect on seams, side adjusters in same fabrics, patch pocket and bindings on lapels and pockets.

Shirting is slim and features small detailing; small round collars, contrasting fabric cuffs and embroidered designs. Bright tartans and English checks sit alongside washed stripes and colourful floral prints.

Jerseys and knitwear provide great layering items, adding both colour and texture from vibrant cable knits to superfine stripe merino crews. Jersey provides a sportier feel, with bright roll neck jerseys styled under an English check slim shirt, tartan waistcoat and Harris Tweed blazer.

A rich selection of outerwear is available for Winter; tailored overcoats feature piping detailing on lapel and cuffs, classic trench coats come in washed barathea and duffle coats are a highlight.

Style Tip

5 fashion don'ts for men!

  1. Wearing a suit or business casual wear without a belt. Yes, it did happen and no, it is never acceptable.
  2. White socks. Never acceptable in business. Unless you're serving the tennis ball on the court while presenting to the board.
  3. Mixing 2 patterns on top and bottom. There is no set rule for that but it simply looks ridiculous. Imagine a vertical striped or herringbone shirt with a pinstriped trouser. Unless you're the clown.
  4. Wearing short sleeves under your suit jacket. Not acceptable in any part of the world, even in extreme heat. The cuff should be visible at all times. Unless it is for some sort of comedy persona.
  5. Not wearing socks with your formal shoes. Unless you're "the sartorialist", now he has earned his fashion statement.
