Dress codes decoded
Business wear, business casual and smart casual. Dress down days. Soiree.Eveningwear. Black tie. Cocktail. Beach chic. Glamorous. Trendy. Hip...
Dress codes were meant to make our lives easier by telling us what to wear and sparing us the agony of arriving in the wrong outfit and feeling out of place. But not all dress codes deliver just that, as many new terms add to the confusion.
To simplify things, think of the occasion, the time of day and the people you will meet for any event.
Business functions:
To start with, Business wear means business at its highest level. That is dressing for success regardless of the industry you're in. Even though you might be working in a creative environment, the suit or a crisp, constructed outfit will be the case. Run a total check from head to toe. Your suit may be going to work but your shoes may look like you’re heading to a salsa night while your makeup is fit for the ball. That will be your image breaker. Consider all aspects from hair, makeup, nails and accessories to complete your look.
Business casual is where things start to get messy. Think Business first and casual second, just like the words are in order. It still means business, so you can dress down one level as in separates and tailored pieces that say you're here to do business and not lounge by.
Smart casual has to be smart, neat and trendy. Nothing you might wear to the mall or the park. Again, in a business environment it has to project business. You can get creative here by mixing and matching items that end up looking smart rather than bohemian.
Dress down days. These were first intended to give employees a relaxed day where you don't need to don on the suit. In reality, it gave a false interpretation where people literally dressed down to the extent of beachwear and flip-flops or tracksuits and trainers, depending on individual expression. Again, it has to look neat and business like. Many companies stopped that trend altogether to save them the hassle of explaining the term and managing the "vacation mode" people put themselves in!
Social functions dress decoding to be continued in our upcoming editions... |
